🇰🇷 Kim Min-ji (Minji)

NewJeans leader whose calm magnetism reframed K-pop femininity

In a stuffy practice room in southern Seoul on a humid July afternoon in 2022, five teenagers waited for the green light on a debut nobody outside HYBE quite believed in. There was no teaser campaign, no countdown, no glossy concept film — just a music video that dropped without warning at midnight. By morning, the girl at the front of frame — narrow-shouldered, almond-eyed, hair cut into a blunt curtain over her brow — had become the most discussed new face in Korean pop. Kim Min-ji, who performs simply as Minji, did not announce herself; she materialised. Within a year she would be the youngest Asian house ambassador in Chanel's history.

Kim Min-ji was born on 11 May 2004 in Gwangju, the city in southwest Korea best known for democracy uprisings and stubborn regional pride. She moved to Seoul as a child and, by middle school, was a fixture on the audition circuit, the unglamorous purgatory in which thousands of Korean preteens compete for the handful of trainee slots offered each year by the big agencies. In 2018 she signed with Source Music, a HYBE subsidiary, and was quietly transferred into a then-secret project run by the producer and creative director Min Hee-jin under the working name ADOR.

Min Hee-jin had built her reputation as the visual architect of SM Entertainment, designing album worlds for f(x), SHINee and Red Velvet. Her thesis for NewJeans was a deliberate rupture from the maximalist, sci-fi spectacle that had come to define fourth-generation K-pop. She wanted a group that looked like the girls on a Seoul subway after school: real ages, real cheeks, no boss-mode choreography. Minji, with her unforced gravitas and ability to look like she was thinking on camera, became the visual anchor of that thesis.

NewJeans debuted in July 2022 with no formal pre-release marketing. The single 'Attention' was released first as a music video and only later as a song you could stream. 'Hype Boy', 'Cookie' and 'Hurt' followed within weeks, all from the same debut EP. The group sold more than 440,000 first-week copies of that mini-album, the highest opening for any debut girl group in Korean history. Minji was named leader during pre-debut, a decision Min Hee-jin later said was made the day the producer watched her speak to younger trainees in the cafeteria.

The second EP, 'OMG', and the conceptual two-part single 'Ditto' detonated the group's commercial position in early 2023. 'Ditto', a wistful, hazy track structured around a Jersey-club drum pattern, spent a record-breaking number of weeks at number one on the Circle Digital Chart and turned NewJeans into the first act in K-pop history to chart simultaneously across Korean streaming, US Billboard and UK Official Charts within their debut year. Minji's vocal — clean, breathy, deliberately under-sung — was the through-line.

By late 2023, luxury houses had abandoned subtlety. Chanel announced Minji as a global ambassador, an unusually fast escalation from rising face to full house ambassador. Calvin Klein, Dior Beauty and Levi's followed. The Korean press began describing her on-camera composure as 'Joseon-era stillness', a slightly arch phrase comparing her bone structure and posture to early-modern court portraiture.

In April 2024 NewJeans's circle was rocked by a corporate war between Min Hee-jin and HYBE chairman Bang Si-hyuk, ostensibly over allegations of attempted management buyout. The fight was bitter, public and almost entirely waged through legal filings and shareholder letters. The five members stood, on camera and in writing, with their producer. Minji, as leader, delivered the public statements. She was nineteen.

In November 2024 the group held an extraordinary livestream announcing they were terminating their exclusive contracts with ADOR, citing failure to protect them from internal harassment. They have continued to perform as NJZ while the dispute moves through Korean courts. Whatever the outcome, the episode crystallised a generational shift: a girl group that had built its identity on softness chose, in public, the harder path.

Minji's onscreen restraint and offscreen spine have made her the rare K-pop figure who is both an aesthetic object and an authorial voice. She has said in interviews that she does not enjoy the word 'visual', a Korean-industry term for the prettiest member of a group, because it implies a job rather than a person. She prefers, she said, to be described as the one who pays attention.

Outside the group she has continued to surface in spaces conventionally closed to working idols. She read poetry at the Seoul International Book Fair in 2024, performed in a chamber arrangement with the conductor Chung Myung-whun at a benefit concert for the Korean Symphony Orchestra, and accepted a guest invitation from the Korean Film Archive to introduce a screening of a Kim Ki-young restoration. None of these activities were promoted as endorsement spend. Friends close to the group describe her as a methodical reader who underlines paperbacks with a soft pencil and refuses to translate her favourite Korean novels into English even when asked.

“I don't really like the word visual. It makes it sound like a position rather than a person.”

“We didn't choose this group. The five of us became it together.”

Minji matters because NewJeans, more than any other group, has shifted the centre of gravity of K-pop away from spectacle and toward intimacy, and Minji is the calm centre of that thesis. The group's success demonstrated that the world's most lucrative pop genre did not require ever-larger choreography, ever-more-aggressive concepts and ever-younger debut ages. It could grow quieter and still grow.

Her role in the 2024 dispute with HYBE marked one of the first moments in K-pop history when active members publicly chose loyalty to a creative director over loyalty to a parent agency. Whatever the legal outcome, the precedent reshaped the power balance between idols, producers and conglomerates, and Minji, at nineteen, was its public face.
