🇮🇳 Vidya Balan

The Malayali sociologist's daughter who built a commercial career out of films no man was on the poster of.

Kahaani, The Dirty Picture, and the rebuilding of the female-led Hindi film.

In Sujoy Ghosh's Kahaani (2012), Vidya Balan plays a heavily pregnant software engineer who arrives in Kolkata in October looking for her missing husband and finds, instead, the city's full machinery — taxis, paan stalls, the corridors of the metro, the back rooms of Intelligence Bureau offices — bending around her solitude. The film is two hours long; Balan, thirty-three, is in nearly every frame; and the entire commercial calculation of mainstream Hindi cinema bends, for those two hours, around the proposition that a woman can carry a thriller without a man in the poster. It worked. It then kept working.

She was born in January 1979 to a Tamil-Malayali family in Bombay — her father P.R. Balan an executive at Digicable, her mother Saraswathy a homemaker. She finished schooling at St. Anthony's Girls' High School in Chembur, enrolled at St. Xavier's College in sociology, and finished an MA in the subject from the University of Mumbai while auditioning, unsuccessfully, for almost every Hindi film going. Sociology, by her later admission, taught her to read people on a set as data points first and casting decisions second.

She first acted in Ekta Kapoor's television soap Hum Paanch (1995) while still at school, playing the elder of the five Mathur sisters. Twelve Tamil and Malayalam scripts were signed and then dropped — Chakram, Run, others — earning her a brief reputation as a jinxed presence in Kollywood and Mollywood, a label she would later say she had spent a decade unlearning. The Kerala film industry has, in recent years, formally apologised.

Pradeep Sarkar's Parineeta (2005), as the long-suffering Lalita in a Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay adaptation opposite Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt, was the Hindi debut. Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006) opposite Sanjay Dutt, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) opposite Akshay Kumar were the consolidation. Neither film required her to be glamorous; both made enormous amounts of money.

She underwent a public weight gain for Abhishek Chaubey's Ishqiya (2010), gave a brittle, watchful performance as a Gorakhpur widow opposite Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi, and prepared for the role that would change the economics of her career. Milan Luthria's The Dirty Picture (2011), as the southern starlet Silk Smitha, won her the National Film Award for Best Actress and made the female-led, sexually frank, mid-budget Hindi film financially respectable again. The film earned over Rs 1 billion against a Rs 180-million budget.

Kahaani (2012) confirmed the proposition — the film grossed Rs 1 billion against a Rs 80-million budget and remains one of the most influential female-led Indian thrillers of the modern era. Bobby Jasoos (2014), Tumhari Sulu (2017) — as a Mumbai housewife who becomes a late-night radio jockey of dubious erotic content — and Sherni (2021), as a forest officer hunting a man-eating leopard across the Madhya Pradesh forest, extended it.

She married Siddharth Roy Kapur, then CEO of UTV Motion Pictures and later founder of Roy Kapur Films, in December 2012 in a Tamil Iyer ceremony at Bandra Bandstand followed by a Punjabi reception. The couple has remained, decisively, two-career.

She is one of the few Hindi-cinema A-listers to have publicly refused to slim down for any role for which an actor would not be asked, and the refusal has, against industry prediction, not cost her work. The shift she represents — that body size is a casting question and not a moral one — has slowly diffused through the industry behind her.

Mission Mangal (2019), as one of the ISRO scientists behind India's Mars Orbiter Mission, was her one obvious ensemble blockbuster; the film grossed over Rs 2.9 billion worldwide and was, at the time, the highest-grossing Hindi film led primarily by a female ensemble. Do Aur Do Pyaar (2024) returned her to the small, ambivalent female lead — a marriage on the edge of an affair, played without melodrama.

She has, in two decades, never made a film for the sole purpose of looking decorative. The body of work — twenty-six features and counting — is one of the most coherent in contemporary Hindi cinema.
