March Tian Boedihardjo was born in 1998 in Hong Kong, into a family of ethnic Hokkien heritage with roots in Anxi, in China's Fujian province. From very early childhood his facility with numbers set him apart, and his family made the unusual decision to accelerate his education far beyond his years rather than hold him to the standard pace of primary school.

The first sign the wider world noticed came when Boedihardjo travelled to the United Kingdom to sit A-Level examinations, the rigorous tests British students take at the end of secondary school. At nine years and three months old, he attained A grades in both Mathematics and Further Mathematics, subjects that defeat many students nearly twice his age. The results made international headlines and set up an even more startling next step.

In 2007, Hong Kong Baptist University admitted Boedihardjo as its youngest-ever student, enrolling him in a specially designed five-year programme that would take him through both a bachelor's and a master's degree in mathematics. At the news conference introducing him, he came across as a normal, cheerful child: he said he liked to spend most of his time studying, but that on weekends he still enjoyed playing with his friends from kindergarten.

The glare of early fame can be unkind to child prodigies, and Boedihardjo faced persistent questions about whether he had traded away an ordinary childhood. His answer, given years later, was firm and untroubled. He said he had no regrets, and that if he were given a second chance he would have gone down exactly the same path. He also confessed a certain discomfort with the word prodigy, feeling it implied his achievements had come without hard work.

After completing his studies in Hong Kong, Boedihardjo continued into advanced research and an academic career abroad. He earned his doctorate and, in 2016, joined the University of California, Los Angeles, as a Hedrick Assistant Professor, later continuing as an assistant adjunct professor. By his teens' end he had gone from the world's most famous nine-year-old undergraduate to a genuine research mathematician teaching university students.

The decision to accelerate him so radically was not without controversy, and it placed a very young child under an intense public gaze. In Hong Kong, his admission to university at nine became front-page news, and the university built a bespoke five-year curriculum around him, blending a bachelor's and master's degree in mathematics so that his progress could be paced rather than simply rushed.

The years that followed tested the durability of early promise, a test many prodigies fail as the novelty fades and the mathematics grows genuinely hard. Boedihardjo did not fade. He pressed on into doctoral research and a genuine academic career, moving from Hong Kong to the United States and into the demanding fields of functional analysis and operator theory.

His own reflections on the experience carry a quiet authority precisely because they come from the far side of it. He has said he dislikes the word prodigy, feeling it implies his achievements arrived without effort, and he has insisted that, given the chance to live it again, he would choose the same accelerated path. His childhood dream had been to become a lecturer; asked if it came true, he answered simply that it had, but not entirely.

As of recent years, Boedihardjo has served as an assistant professor of mathematics at Michigan State University, working in functional analysis and operator theory far from the spotlight of his childhood. Asked whether his boyhood dream of becoming a lecturer had come true, he offered a characteristically measured reply: yes, but not entirely. It is the answer of someone who has kept moving long after the cameras left, still chasing the mathematics rather than the fame.
