Early Development and CSKA Moscow
Born in 1983 in Tambov, Zhirkov received his initial training under Valery Sharapov at the Tambov Regional Children and Youth Sports School. He began his senior professional journey at Spartak Tambov, netting 26 goals across 74 matches. In January 2004, he moved to CSKA Moscow. His tenure at the club saw immediate success, starting with a 3–1 victory in the 2004 Russian Super Cup. In 2005, he played a pivotal role in the UEFA Cup final against Sporting CP, scoring in the 65th minute to help secure a 3–1 victory, marking the first time a Russian club claimed the title.

The transfer to Chelsea in July 2009 for £18 million marked his entry into the English Premier League. His competitive debut occurred in a League Cup match against Queens Park Rangers on 23 September 2009. During the 2009–2010 season, he adapted to the left-back position following injuries to teammates. He contributed to a historic double as Chelsea secured both the Premier League title and the FA Cup. His sole goal for the club arrived on 19 October 2010 during a Champions League fixture against Spartak Moscow.
Domestic Return and Later Career
Zhirkov transitioned back to the Russian Premier League in August 2011, joining Anzhi Makhachkala on a four-year contract for a reported fee of £13.2 million. He later played for Dynamo Moscow starting in August 2013 and subsequently joined Zenit in January 2016. Throughout his career, he accumulated over 100 international caps for Russia, a milestone reached since his first appearance in 2005.
