Early Career and Ukrainian Beginnings
Nikiforov began his professional path at Chornomorets Odesa. Between 1988 and 1989, he spent a year with Dynamo Kyiv, primarily featuring for their reserve squad. He eventually returned to Chornomorets, where he participated in the first season of the Ukrainian Premier League and secured the Ukrainian Cup in 1992. His developmental years also included success with the Soviet Union U-18 squad, claiming victory at the 1987 FIFA U-17 World Cup and the 1988 UEFA U-18 Championship.

In 1993, Nikiforov joined Spartak Moscow, establishing himself as a key defensive player. During his tenure, the team captured three Russian Premier League titles in 1993, 1994, and 1996, alongside the 1994 Russian Cup. His performance led to a move to Spain to play for Sporting de Gijón. He arrived in Asturias alongside compatriots Dmitri Cheryshev and Igor Lediakhov. He remained with the club until their relegation from La Liga.
International Tenures and European Competition
After early appearances for the Commonwealth of Independent States and brief representation of Ukraine, Nikiforov committed to the Russian national team. He participated in three major international tournaments: the 1994 and 2002 FIFA World Cups, and UEFA Euro 1996. Across these events, he recorded eight appearances, though the team was eliminated in the group stage on each occasion. Later, in 2009 and 2010, he participated in the Legends Cup as part of the Russian squad.
Final Playing Years and Coaching
Nikiforov spent five seasons in the Netherlands, starting at PSV Eindhoven, where he contributed to consecutive Eredivisie titles and three Johan Cruyff Shield wins. In the 2002–03 season, he signed with RKC Waalwijk, helping the team secure a ninth-place finish. Following a final season with the Urawa Red Diamonds in Japan, he retired from professional play. He transitioned into coaching, serving as an assistant at FC Kuban Krasnodar and FC Dynamo Moscow before joining the Russia national team staff under Valeri Karpin in August 2022.
