Selected for cosmonaut training in 1963, Artyukhin was initially slated for the Voskhod 3 mission, which authorities eventually canceled. His singular space mission occurred in 1974 aboard Soyuz 14. During this flight, his background in communications and engineering served the operational requirements of the mission.
Post-Flight Contributions
After concluding his active flight career in 1982, Artyukhin shifted his focus to ground-based aerospace projects. He participated in the development of the Buran space shuttle and contributed to the structured training programs for new cosmonauts. He remained active in these technical and instructional capacities until his death in 1998 at Zvyozdny Gorodok.
