Early Career and The Formation of DDT
Born in 1957 in Yagodnoye, Shevchuk was raised in Ufa before pursuing a career in music. Initially working as an art teacher, he co-founded the group DDT in 1980 alongside Vladimir Sigachyov. The ensemble's third album, Periferiya, attracted significant pressure from Soviet authorities, leading Shevchuk to dissolve the original lineup in 1985. Relocating to St. Petersburg with his wife Elmira, he reformed the band and became active in the Leningrad Rock Club, eventually touring internationally in Hungary, the United States, and Japan.

The death of his wife in 1992 prompted the release of the album Aktrisa Vesna, which featured her artwork. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Shevchuk balanced his musical output with active involvement in conflict zones. In 1995, he conducted a peace mission during the First Chechen War, performing 50 concerts for Russian soldiers. In 1999, he visited Yugoslavia to document the destruction of Orthodox churches in Kosovo and speak against international military intervention.
Political Dissent and Legal Challenges
Shevchuk gained notoriety for his vocal criticism of the Russian government and the policies of Vladimir Putin. His participation in the 2008 Dissenters' March and subsequent protests against the war in Georgia solidified his role as a public figure of opposition. In 2010, he engaged in a televised dialogue with then-Prime Minister Putin regarding democratic freedoms. Following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Shevchuk released anti-war tracks and spoke out against the conflict during a concert in Ufa. These actions resulted in a 50,000 ruble fine under war censorship laws, a judgment he unsuccessfully appealed.
