Yuri Tschinkel began his formal academic path in 1979 at the Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium in East Berlin, completing his secondary studies with the Abitur in 1983. He subsequently transitioned to higher education, graduating with honors from Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1990 before earning his doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1992.
Academic Appointments and Research
Following his doctoral work under Yuri Manin and Michael Artin, Tschinkel held a junior fellowship at Harvard University between 1992 and 1995. His teaching career progressed at the University of Illinois Chicago, where he served as an assistant professor from 1995 and an associate professor until 2003. He later occupied a professorship at the University of Göttingen from 2003 to 2008. Since 2005, he has held a professorship at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and in 2012, he became director of the mathematics and physics department at the Simons Foundation.

Tschinkel focuses his scholarly output on number theory, arithmetic geometry, and automorphic forms. His research investigates rational points on algebraic varieties. Throughout his career, he has authored or co-authored over 110 research publications. His collaborative efforts include editing numerous anthologies, such as works dedicated to the arithmetic of higher-dimensional algebraic varieties and collections in honor of Yuri Manin and the legacy of Gauss and Dirichlet.
Professional Recognition
His contributions to the field are marked by various fellowships and academic memberships. He was recognized as a Leibniz Fellow at the École normale supérieure and as a Clay Mathematics Institute Fellow. In 2006, he presented at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid. He maintains memberships in the Academia Europaea, the American Mathematical Society, and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. He was elected a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2013 and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2014.
