The first three volumes of the Handbook of Game Theory with Economic Applications were edited by Sergiu Hart in collaboration with Robert J. Aumann. Academic Formation
Born in Bucharest in 1949, Hart moved to Israel in 1963. He pursued his higher education at Tel Aviv University, completing a B.Sc. in mathematics and statistics in 1970 and an M.Sc. in mathematics in 1971, both with summa cum laude distinctions. He continued his doctoral research under the supervision of Robert Aumann, focusing on cooperative game theory models of economic equilibrium, and received his Ph.D., also summa cum laude, in 1976.

Hart held faculty positions at Stanford University from 1976 to 1979 before returning to the School of Mathematical Sciences at Tel Aviv University, where he became a professor in 1985. In 1991, he joined the Hebrew University of Jerusalem as a member of the departments of economics and mathematics. During his tenure at Hebrew University, he served as the founding director of the Center for the Study of Rationality from 1991 to 1999.
Research and Contributions
His primary research interests involve game theory and economics, with secondary contributions spanning computer science, probability, and statistics. His output includes formal analysis of repeated games, strategic use of information, adaptive dynamics, riskiness, and mechanisms for fair distribution. He served as the President of the Game Theory Society from 2008 to 2010 and acted as the Chairperson of the Humanities Division of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities from 2019 to 2025.
Awards and Memberships
Hart has received recognition including the Israel Defense Prize in 1975, the Rothschild Prize in the Social Sciences in 1998, and the Israel Prize in Economics and Statistics in 2018. He was elected a Fellow of the Econometric Society in 1985 and became a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities in 2006.
