Early Career and European Breakthrough
After debuting in the Argentine Primera División with Racing Club, Romero transferred to the Dutch club AZ in 2007. Under manager Louis van Gaal, he transitioned into the first-choice goalkeeper role. During the 2008–09 season, he achieved a 950-minute clean sheet streak. Despite fracturing his hand later that year, he contributed to the team's Eredivisie title victory. Romero earned 96 caps for Argentina since his 2009 debut. He featured in three Copa América tournaments, finishing as a runner-up in 2015 and 2016, and participated in two FIFA World Cup tournaments, reaching the final in 2014. His international record remains the highest for any goalkeeper in the nation’s history.
Manchester United and Domestic Return
In July 2015, Romero joined Manchester United. Serving primarily as a backup to David de Gea, he provided depth in domestic and European fixtures. He started every match during the club's 2016–17 UEFA Europa League campaign, including the final, where he kept a clean sheet against Ajax to secure the title. He made 61 appearances for the English side before returning to Argentina in 2022 to compete for Boca Juniors, where he secured an Argentine Primera División title.
