Serhiy Zhadan

Joining the 13th Khartia Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine in June 2024, Serhiy Zhadan moved from the literary landscape into active military service. Born in 1974 in Starobilsk, he established himself as a prominent Ukrainian poet, novelist, and musician, drawing heavily on the industrial environments of the nation’s eastern regions to inform his expansive creative output.

Academic Foundation and Literary Emergence

Zhadan completed his studies at the H.S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University in 1996. His academic focus centered on the work of Mykhaylo Semenko and Ukrainian futurist writers from the 1920s, a theme that influenced his later literary trajectory. Following his graduation, he spent three years as a graduate student of philology and taught world and Ukrainian literature until 2004, eventually transitioning into a career as a freelance writer.

Prose and Poetic Achievements

Over his career, Zhadan has published 12 books of poetry and 7 novels. His 2010 novel, Voroshilovgrad, gained significant recognition, eventually serving as the basis for the 2018 film The Wild Fields, directed by Yaroslav Lodygin. His writing style, often described by critics as verbal jazz, reflects his diverse background as a linguist and translator. He has rendered works by authors including Paul Celan and Charles Bukowski into Ukrainian, while his own poetry has appeared in numerous international journals.

Musical Collaborations

Beyond his literary work, Zhadan has been an active figure in the music scene. Since 2008, he has performed with the ska band Zhadan i Sobaky, releasing five studio albums as of 2026. He has also explored electronic and experimental formats, notably collaborating with producer Yuriy Gurzhy on the 2021 album Fokstroty and the 2023 release Skovorodance.

Political Engagement and Public Service

Zhadan has been involved in Ukrainian political life since his time as a student, co-organizing the Red Thistle neo-futuristic group in 1992. He participated in the 2004 Orange Revolution and served on the coordination council of Euromaidan Kharkiv in 2013. Following the 2014 Revolution of Dignity, he continued his public advocacy while also serving as a member of the Taras Shevchenko National Award Committee from 2016 to 2019.
