Formative Years and Education
Tankian attended the Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School in Los Angeles, where he crossed paths with future collaborators Daron Malakian and Shavo Odadjian. He later enrolled at California State University, Northridge, earning a degree in marketing in 1989. While in college, he began engaging in political activism, specifically focusing on the recognition of the Armenian genocide through the Armenian Students Association.

The foundation for System of a Down emerged from a band called Soil, which featured Tankian on vocals and keyboards. Following Soil's dissolution, Tankian, Malakian, and Odadjian formed System of a Down, eventually recruiting drummer John Dolmayan. The group released five studio albums including Toxicity and Hypnotize, achieving significant commercial success with three albums debuting at number one on the Billboard 200. In 2006, the band secured a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance for the track B.Y.O.B.
Solo Endeavors and Activism
Beyond his work with System of a Down, Tankian launched a solo career with his debut album, Elect the Dead, which featured music videos for every track created by individual directors. He later released projects such as Elect the Dead Symphony, Imperfect Harmonies, Harakiri, Orca, and Elasticity. In 2002, he co-founded the non-profit organization Axis of Justice alongside Tom Morello to further his activism. His contributions to music and advocacy were formally recognized in 2011 when he received the Armenian Prime Minister's Medal.
