Charles Joel Nordström Kinnaman, born on 25 November 1979 in Stockholm, established his acting career as a child performer in the 1990 Swedish soap opera Storstad. After a long hiatus from the screen, he returned to professional acting in 2002, eventually securing international recognition through a series of high-profile roles in both European and American film and television productions.
Early Career and Training
Before attending the Malmö Theatre Academy, from which he graduated in 2007, Kinnaman spent time traveling through Southeast Asia and South America. His early professional years included stage roles at the Backa Theatre in Gothenburg and a prominent portrayal of Raskolnikov in a theatrical adaptation of Crime and Punishment. He gained widespread notice in Sweden following his performance in the 2010 film Easy Money, a role that secured him a Guldbagge Award.

Seeking to build a career in the United States, Kinnaman hired an American agent, leading to his international film debut in The Darkest Hour. He gained further traction with a four-season lead role as Detective Stephen Holder in the AMC series The Killing. His filmography expanded to include the 2014 RoboCop remake, alongside appearances in action-thrillers such as Safe House, Run All Night, and the DC Comics films Suicide Squad and The Suicide Squad.
Streaming Television Success
Kinnaman established a strong presence on major streaming platforms between 2016 and 2026. His work includes portraying Governor Will Conway in House of Cards for Netflix and the lead role of Takeshi Kovacs in Altered Carbon. He also featured in the Amazon Prime Video series Hanna. Since 2019, he has held a central role as astronaut Ed Baldwin in the Apple TV+ science fiction series For All Mankind.
