Joel Spolsky

The Microsoft Excel team employed a young programmer named Joel Spolsky between 1991 and 1994, tasking him with the design of Excel Basic. This role served as a foundational period before he transitioned into a multi-decade career as an entrepreneur, blogger, and developer of widely used project management software tools.

Early Life and Education

Born in 1965 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Spolsky spent his first 15 years in the United States before moving to Israel. During his time abroad, he finished high school and fulfilled his mandatory military obligation within the Paratroopers Brigade, later helping to establish the kibbutz Hanaton in Lower Galilee. He returned to the United States in 1987 to pursue higher education, attending the University of Pennsylvania for one year. He subsequently transferred to Yale University, where he held membership in Pierson College and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, graduating summa cum laude in 1991.

Microsoft and Early Career

Spolsky entered the workforce as a program manager at Microsoft in 1991. His primary responsibilities included the development of Excel Basic and the management of the strategy behind Visual Basic for Applications. After concluding his tenure at the company in 1994, he relocated to New York City. There, he gained experience working for Juno Online Services and Viacom. In 2000, he established Fog Creek Software, a firm that served as a platform for his subsequent ventures.

Blogging and Software Development

Upon founding Fog Creek Software, Spolsky initiated a blog titled Joel on Software. This platform quickly gained prominence as an early example of business-led industry commentary. In 2005, he appeared in the documentary Aardvark'd: 12 Weeks with Geeks, which examined the internal creation of a remote assistance tool. In 2011, he launched Trello, a management tool based on Kanban methodology, which was later acquired by Atlassian in 2017 for $425 million. His other corporate leadership roles included serving as CEO of Stack Overflow, a site he co-founded with Jeff Atwood in 2008, until 2019.

Corporate Transitions

In 2016, Spolsky shifted his responsibilities at Fog Creek Software by appointing Anil Dash as CEO while maintaining his board seat. The entity, later renamed Glitch, was eventually sold to Fastly in 2022, prompting Spolsky to step down as chairman. Similarly, after the sale of Stack Overflow for $1.8 billion in June 2021, he resigned from his role as chairman of that organization.
