Joel Pohjanpalo emerged as a prolific scoring talent in Helsinki before navigating a professional career defined by international loans and pivotal strikes. A product of the HJK youth system, he transitioned from a record-breaking reserve performance in the Finnish second division to senior leagues across Germany, Turkey, and Italy, eventually securing a key role within the Italian football landscape.
Early Development and HJK Breakthrough
Born in Helsinki on 13 September 1994, Pohjanpalo began his youth career with PK-35 in 1999 before joining HJK Helsinki at age 11. He debuted for the reserve side, Klubi-04, in 2011, where he scored 33 league goals. His Veikkausliiga debut arrived on 26 October 2011. By April 2012, he achieved prominence by scoring a hat-trick in 162 seconds against IFK Mariehamn. He rejected a contract offer from Liverpool in August 2012 to prioritize playing time.

In 2013, Bayer Leverkusen signed Pohjanpalo, subsequently loaning him to VfR Aalen and later Fortuna Düsseldorf, where he earned Player of the Month honors in October 2014. Upon returning to Leverkusen in 2016, he scored four goals in his first thirty minutes of play. However, recurring severe injuries disrupted his tenure, leading to 580 days of inactivity and limiting him to 28 total appearances. Further loans included stints at Hamburger SV and Union Berlin.
Success in Turkey and Italy
Following a 16-goal campaign with Caykur Rizespor in Turkey during the 2021–22 season, Pohjanpalo joined Venezia in August 2022 for approximately €3.2 million. He became a central figure for the club, scoring 19 goals in his debut Serie B season. After helping the team achieve promotion to Serie A and renewing his contract through 2027, he moved to Palermo in February 2025 for a fee of around €5 million.
International Participation
Pohjanpalo earned his first cap for the Finland national team in November 2012 at age eighteen. Since that debut, he has accumulated over 80 appearances. His international resume includes participation in qualification matches for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup, as well as selection for the UEFA Euro 2020 final tournament squad.
