Joel Obi

The Inter Milan Champions League victory in 2010 marked the beginning of a professional journey for Joel Chukwuma Obi. Born in Lagos on 22 May 1991, the Nigerian midfielder spent his formative years in Italy, navigating the complexities of Serie A and various loan spells while building a reputation as a versatile tactical player.

Early Development and Inter Milan Debut

Obi began his progression through the Inter Milan youth system under Daniele Bernazzani. By 2009, he attracted the attention of José Mourinho, earning a place on the club's list for the Champions League campaign. His official debut occurred on 29 September 2010, appearing as a late substitute against Werder Bremen. He secured his first goal for the club in 2012 against Cesena and eventually completed 71 appearances across all competitions for Inter.

Navigating Italian Clubs

The midfielder experienced several transfers throughout his tenure in Italy. He moved to Torino in 2015 on a four-year contract for a fee of €2.2 million, where he overcame recurring injuries to feature regularly. His subsequent career included a three-year deal with Chievo Verona, a loan period at the Turkish club Alanyaspor, and a move to U.S. Salernitana 1919. In July 2022, he signed a two-year contract with Reggina before moving to the Serie C side Vis Pesaro in early 2024.

International Representation

Nigeria selected Obi for his international debut during a friendly match against Sierra Leone on 9 February 2011 in Lagos. He maintained a starting position for eleven consecutive matches before an injury interrupted his international momentum in 2012. He received a call-up to the national team's preliminary squad for the 2014 World Cup and was later included in the final 23-man group for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
