Matip began his youth career at SC Weitmar 45 and joined VfL Bochum in 1997. By July 2000, he transitioned to the Schalke 04 youth system. His senior introduction arrived on 7 November 2009 against Bayern Munich, where he scored a goal. Over his tenure in Gelsenkirchen, he featured in 258 competitive matches and netted 23 goals. His initial Premier League goal followed in October 2016 against Crystal Palace. Throughout his time at Anfield, Matip became a central figure in the team's defensive improvements.
