Johannes Taslim, born in Palembang on 23 June 1981, transitioned from a high-level competitive career in judo to international acting. His professional trajectory spans from representing the Indonesian national team on the mats for over a decade to performing in major studio film franchises and television dramas, establishing a distinct presence in global action cinema.
Competitive Judo Career
Taslim engaged in extensive martial arts training from childhood, focusing on judo while also practicing taekwondo, wushu, and pencak silat. He joined the Indonesian national judo team in 1997, maintaining that status until his retirement from competition in 2009. His competitive record includes a gold medal in the Men's Free Class at the 1999 Southeast Asia Judo Championships held in Singapore. He secured a silver medal at the 2007 Southeast Asian Games, alongside two bronze medals earned at the 2001 and 2005 iterations of the same event. In 2008, he earned a gold medal in the Men –81 kg class at the Pekan Olahraga Nasional.

Before entering the film industry, Taslim worked as a model for print advertisements and television commercials. His acting debut occurred in the 2008 film Karma. He gained significant professional recognition after winning the role of Sergeant Jaka in the 2011 action film The Raid, a part he secured following a series of fight auditions. In 2012, he appeared in Dead Mine, an action horror film produced by HBO Asia.
International Cinematic Projects
Taslim expanded his film portfolio into international markets with the role of Jah in the 2013 film Fast & Furious 6. In 2016, he portrayed Manas in Star Trek Beyond. His involvement in the thriller The Night Comes for Us, initially slated for development in 2013, culminated in a 2018 Netflix release. For television, he starred as Li Yong in the historical action series Warrior, which premiered in 2019 and ran until 2023.
Mortal Kombat and Recognitions
In 2019, Taslim was cast as Bi-Han, also known as Sub-Zero, in the Mortal Kombat reboot, which premiered in 2021. He later reprised his participation in the sequel Mortal Kombat II, scheduled for 2026, where his character returned as Noob Saibot. His contributions to the industry have been marked by receiving the Gen.T Indonesia award in 2017 and being named one of Asia's Most Influential Indonesia in 2021.
