Joseph Steven Sakic spent his entire 21-year NHL career representing the Quebec Nordiques and Colorado Avalanche franchise. Between 1988 and 2009, he established himself as a dominant centre and team captain, eventually transitioning into a successful executive role that allowed him to secure additional championships from behind the bench and within the front office.
Early Career and Major Junior
Born in 1969 in Burnaby, Canada, Sakic attended Burnaby North Secondary School before joining the Lethbridge Broncos of the Western Hockey League. During the 1986-87 season, after the team relocated to become the Swift Current Broncos, he earned WHL Rookie of the Year honours. His development was marked by the 1986 bus accident in Saskatchewan, a traumatic event for the team.
