Formative Musical Training
Born in 1956 in Westbury, New York, Satriani began playing guitar at age 14. He pursued formal studies at Five Towns College and under the tutelage of jazz musicians Billy Bauer and Lennie Tristano. During his time at Carle Place High School, he began teaching music. Satriani relocated to Berkeley, California, in 1978 to develop his career. He released his debut album, Not of This Earth, in 1986. His second release, Surfing with the Alien, achieved high chart positions for an instrumental work. Subsequent records such as Flying in a Blue Dream and The Extremist continued his commercial output. He later experimented with electronica on Engines of Creation and released live performances recorded at the Fillmore West and the Grove in Anaheim.
Collaborative Projects
Beyond his solo work, Satriani played with the band Squares and eventually joined the supergroup Chickenfoot in 2008 alongside Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, and Chad Smith. In 1993, he briefly performed with Deep Purple. He also founded the G3 tour in 1995, a concert series designed to feature a rotating selection of guitarists, including Eric Johnson, John Petrucci, and Paul Gilbert, with Satriani serving as the permanent member.
Educational Advocacy
Satriani supports the nonprofit organization Little Kids Rock, which provides instruments and music instruction to public school students.
