🇰🇷 Jungkook (Jeon Jung-kook)

Jeon Jung-kook was born on 1 September 1997 in Mandeok-dong, Busan, the second of two sons in a working-class family that ran a small business. He had no formal music or dance training as a child. He was, by his older brother's recollection, an unusually quiet boy who liked drawing and football and was good at both. At fifteen, in 2011, he auditioned for the talent-discovery show Superstar K3 on Mnet. He was eliminated in the early rounds. Seven Korean agencies scouted him on the way out of the audition. He chose Big Hit, on the recommendation of the trainee he would later debut alongside as RM.

He arrived in Seoul at fifteen, was placed in the BTS pre-debut lineup almost immediately, and trained for two years alongside the older six. He was sent to Los Angeles in 2012 for a six-week dance camp with the choreographer Movement Lifestyle. He returned more confident, in his own retelling, and ready for the debut showcase.

Inside BTS he is the maknae — the youngest, in Korean — and the most-vocal lead. The 2016 solo Begin (about leaving home as a teenager), the 2018 Euphoria (the band's most-streamed solo cut for years), the 2019 My Time (about growing up while famous), and the 2020 Still With You (released free on his birthday) are the canonical showcases. He sings the highest tenor in the BTS arrangement and has, since approximately 2018, also taken the role of the band's lead in stadium-anthem opening lines.

His first commercial single, Seven, was released 14 July 2023. The number-one debut on the Hot 100 was the second by a solo BTS member after Jimin's Like Crazy three months earlier; Jungkook's chart pattern was different, however, with the song holding the top ten on radio and streaming for an unbroken multi-week run. The follow-up, 3D with Jack Harlow (29 September 2023), debuted high on the Hot 100. The lead single Standing Next to You, released 3 November 2023, was the lead from the album Golden, which entered the Billboard 200 at number two.

On 20 November 2022, Jungkook performed Dreamers — a track produced by HYBE in association with FIFA — at the 2022 World Cup opening ceremony at the Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar. He was the first Korean musical artist to perform at a FIFA World Cup opening ceremony. The track entered the Billboard Hot 100.

He enlisted alongside Jimin on 12 December 2023 — the joint enlistment date the two had requested — and served alongside him in the same army base in northern Gyeonggi. The arrangement was widely described in the Korean press as the most-public buddy-system enlistment of the BTS rollout. He was discharged on 11 June 2025.

Inside BTS his position has always been the dual role of vocal lead and group sentimental centre. The other six members have, throughout interviews going back to 2013, repeatedly described him as the brother they each look out for, and the band has, in its planning of solo schedules, deliberately positioned his releases — Seven in July 2023, Golden in November 2023 — as the lead commercial spike of each year. The numbers have justified the positioning. Seven remains, three years later, among the highest-streaming opening weeks for any Korean solo artist.

The Golden album, with its three lead singles — Seven, 3D and Standing Next to You — was structured as a deliberate showcase of three different solo registers: the Andrew Watt summer-radio single, the Jack Harlow rap-feature crossover, and the disco-funk Justin Timberlake-co-written lead. The three together placed Jungkook simultaneously at the top of the Hot 100 streaming chart, the radio play chart, and the album chart in the same release window. No other Korean solo artist has held that trifecta concurrently. The album was certified platinum in the United States inside three months of release.

He has, in interviews from late 2023 and during his post-discharge press cycle in 2025, repeatedly described the BTS group's reunion as the only project of significance to him for the back half of the decade. He has said publicly that he will not pursue acting, that he will not pursue a YouTube-only solo channel, and that the producer-songwriter-soloist track of his BTS bandmates is not the model he intends to follow. His ambition, as he frames it, is the group's continued existence rather than the soloist's individual portfolio. The 2026 BTS comeback rollout — whatever shape it takes — is, by his own statement, his next priority.
