Jungkook: The Golden Maknae Goes Solo

At thirteen, Jeon Jung-kook auditioned for a Korean televised talent show, failed to advance, and walked away with offers from seven entertainment companies anyway. He picked the smallest of them, Big Hit Entertainment, because a fellow trainee named RM impressed him with his rapping. That trainee's company would become BTS's label, and the boy who joined as its youngest, least experienced member would grow into the group's main vocalist, center, and eventually a solo artist who debuted a Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 on his own name.

Busan to Seoul

Jungkook — born Jeon Jung-kook on September 1, 1997, in the Mandeok-dong neighborhood of Busan, South Korea — attended Baekyang Elementary and Middle School before his career pulled him north to Seoul's Singu Middle School. In 2011, at thirteen, he tried out for the talent competition Superstar K3 in Busan. Jungkook was fifteen, the group's maknae, or youngest member, but was assigned an unusually broad remit from the start: main vocalist, lead dancer, sub-rapper, and center. The nickname that would follow him for the rest of his career, "Golden Maknae," had already taken hold before the group even debuted, a shorthand among trainees and early fans for a teenager who seemed competent at nearly every discipline the group required at once — singing, dancing, rapping, and later, writing.

Building a Producer's Credit Inside a Vocalist's Role

Through releases including *Skool Luv Affair* and *Dark & Wild*, both in 2014, Jungkook's vocal presence and stage command deepened, and he began contributing to BTS's songwriting and production process rather than simply performing material written for him. By January 2023, Korea's music copyright association credited him as writer or composer on 23 songs, establishing him as a working member of BTS's in-house production collective rather than a vocalist alone. He also co-founded Golden Closet Films, a channel producing cinematic behind-the-scenes content for the group, extending his creative range into visual production.

Seven and a Solo Chart Record

While other BTS members completed South Korea's mandatory military service, Jungkook launched a solo career that moved with unusual speed. His debut solo album, *Golden* — the title a direct nod to his old nickname — was sung entirely in English and featured collaborations with Ed Sheeran, Latto, and Shawn Mendes. Critical reception ran from enthusiastic to skeptical: NME called the record enough to secure him the decade's "pop king" throne, the Associated Press named it one of the year's strongest pop debuts, and USA Today wrote that he had "punched his ticket to pop superstardom," while The Guardian offered the more reserved assessment of "competent pop-R&B." The commercial results were unambiguous. Lead single "Seven," featuring Latto, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 2023 — his first Hot 100 top-ten placement of any kind, following modest earlier chart appearances for "Left and Right" with Charlie Puth and his solo track "Stay Alive." It became the 1,151st song in Hot 100 history to top the chart and the 68th to debut there, and it made Jungkook the second BTS member, after Jimin's "Like Crazy," to score a solo Hot 100 leader — putting the group in company with only a handful of acts, including The Beatles, to produce multiple individual chart-topping members. "Seven" also became the fastest song ever to reach one billion Spotify streams, surpassing a record previously held by Miley Cyrus's "Flowers," and he became the first Korean soloist to perform an official FIFA World Cup song, at the 2022 tournament.

Service and Return

Jungkook completed his mandatory South Korean military service, receiving his discharge on June 11, 2025, rejoining bandmates for BTS's expected group reunion.

Recognition Beyond Music

Jungkook graduated from the School of Performing Arts Seoul in 2017 with its President's Award, the school's highest honor, and later earned a degree from Global Cyber University's Department of Broadcasting and Entertainment in March 2022. His honors extend into government and civic recognition: a Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Commendation in 2016, a Presidential Commendation in 2017, South Korea's Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit (5th class) in 2018, the Asia Society's Game Changer Award in 2020, and the Korea Society's James A. Van Fleet Award, also in 2020 — recognition that treats his career as a matter of cultural diplomacy as much as entertainment.

Why Jungkook Is Called a Genius

The label attached to Jungkook well before he was old enough to vote, and it describes a specific kind of skill: unusual competence across multiple disciplines that are normally specialized separately in the K-pop system, where idols are typically slotted as a vocalist, a dancer, or a rapper. Jungkook was, from his mid-teens, credibly all three, plus increasingly a songwriter and producer with two dozen registered composition credits and his own video production outfit. That is a claim about versatility and work-rate under an unusually demanding training system — 12-to-15-hour days as a young teenager — rather than about raw intellectual originality; nothing in the record suggests conceptual innovation on the scale the word "genius" carries in science or invention.
