Tom Holkenborg, better known as Junkie XL, built a career spanning electronic production, club DJ sets, and large-scale film scoring. Born in Lichtenvoorde in 1967, the Dutch musician transitioned from industrial rock and new wave roots to become a global force in cinematic sound, working on scores for blockbusters like Mad Max: Fury Road and the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
Early Musical Foundations
Holkenborg received classical training from his mother, an accredited music teacher. He began playing piano at age three, moving to drums at eight and guitar by 12. By his teenage years, he took up bass and eventually began working in a music store, which deepened his understanding of digital gear. During the late 1980s, he toured extensively as a multi-instrumentalist with the new wave ensemble Weekend at Waikiki. By 1993, he moved into production for metal bands such as The Gathering and co-founded the industrial rock group Nerve, releasing two LPs.

In 1997, Holkenborg launched his first solo project under the Junkie XL name with the album Saturday Teenage Kick. The work merged breakbeat rhythms with rock elements. Following a tour with The Prodigy, he gained traction in the U.S. rave scene. He continued this trajectory with the 1999 album Big Sounds of the Drags. His 2003 double-disc album, Radio JXL: A Broadcast from the Computer Hell Cabin, incorporated a fictional pirate radio concept and featured collaborations with artists including Robert Smith, Dave Gahan, and Chuck D.
The Elvis Remix and Global Recognition
Holkenborg achieved widespread commercial success in 2002 after the Elvis Presley estate granted permission to remix the 1968 single A Little Less Conversation. Used for a Nike World Cup commercial, the remix topped charts in 24 countries. This success bolstered his reputation as a producer and led to increased demand for his work in feature films and television series, including tracks for Blade, The Beach, and the NBC program Las Vegas.
Cinematic Compositions
Relocating to Los Angeles in 2003, Holkenborg shifted his focus toward film scoring. He collaborated with Hans Zimmer and Remote Control Productions on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. His extensive list of subsequent credits includes Deadpool, Alita: Battle Angel, Terminator: Dark Fate, Godzilla vs. Kong, Army of the Dead, Three Thousand Years of Longing, Rebel Moon, and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
