Early Life and Upbringing
Born in Seoul on February 21, 1989, Jung Joon-young spent his youth in Indonesia, Japan, China, France, and the Philippines. Due to his father's international business career, he experienced frequent relocations, which precluded consistent enrollment in traditional schools. Instead, he received private instruction in subjects such as English and mathematics, alongside training in piano, violin, and Taekwondo. By the time he reached the age of 17, he participated in missionary work in the Philippines, where he taught music and Taekwondo to local children.

Jung moved to South Korea to pursue a professional music career. After early involvement in the Hongdae indie scene with groups like Switch On and Flower Mist, he auditioned for Superstar K4. During the competition, his collaboration with Roy Kim on a rock rendition of Becoming Dust achieved significant commercial success. Following his third-place finish in 2012, he released his self-titled 1st Mini Album in October 2013, which earned him the New Male Solo Artist award at the 3rd Gaon Chart Music Awards. His later discography included the 2014 EP Teenager and the 2017 studio album The First Person. From 2015 to 2019, he served as the lead vocalist for the rock band JJY Band, later renamed Drug Restaurant.
Television and Radio Broadcasting
Beyond his musical output, Jung maintained a consistent presence on South Korean television and radio. He joined the cast of the KBS2 variety program 2 Days & 1 Night in 2013, serving as its youngest member until 2019. His broadcasting experience also included hosting the radio program Jung Joon-young's Simsimtapa on MBC FM between 2014 and 2015. Additionally, he expanded into film acting, making his screen debut in the 2015 production Love Forecast.
Legal Conviction and Retirement
In March 2019, investigation into the Burning Sun scandal revealed that Jung had participated in private KakaoTalk chatrooms where he shared videos of non-consensual sexual acts. He admitted to filming women without their consent and subsequently announced his retirement from the entertainment industry. On November 29, 2019, he was sentenced to six years in prison for the rape of multiple unconscious victims and for the illegal distribution of sexual images. The Seoul High Court reduced this sentence to five years in May 2020.
