🇰🇷 V (Kim Tae-hyung)

Kim Tae-hyung was born on 30 December 1995 in Seo District, Daegu, the eldest of three children. He grew up in the rural Geochang County in nearby South Gyeongsang Province for parts of his early childhood, on what he has described in interviews as his grandparents' farm. He played saxophone in middle school and considered, briefly, becoming a farmer. He has retained, throughout his BTS career, a strong identification with the rural southern-Korean cultural register that distinguishes him within the band's Seoul-coded membership.

He was a hidden member of the BTS lineup during the group's pre-debut promotions in 2013 — Big Hit deliberately concealed his identity until shortly before the debut showcase, an unusual strategy intended to maximise visual impact on debut day. The strategy worked. He has, in subsequent years, repeatedly topped Korean and international best-visual polls and is widely identified inside the K-pop industry as the band's visual member.

Inside BTS his vocal role is the low register. The 2016 solo Stigma, the 2018 Singularity, the 2020 Inner Child and the 2021 Sweet Night (from the OST of the Korean drama Itaewon Class) are the canonical showcases. Stylistically he has moved BTS's vocal-arrangement palette toward older-soul and lounge-jazz registers that the band would not otherwise have reached.

Outside BTS he acted, against his agency's initial reservations, in the 2016–2017 KBS historical drama Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth, playing the young noble Han-sung alongside an ensemble that included Park Seo-joon. The performance was widely received as creditable rather than star-making, and he has not returned to acting since. The Hwarang OST collaboration with the actor Park Hyung-sik, It's Definitely You, remains in the BTS extended catalogue.

His solo discography began with a string of BTS-album-credit solo tracks, then with one-off singles — the 2021 Christmas Tree (Itaewon Class OST), the 2022 mood pieces — and then with the Layover album in September 2023. The album was, by HYBE's commercial framing, a deliberate genre detour: a six-track LP produced primarily by Min Hee-jin under the BIGHIT MUSIC imprint, recorded with live instrumentation, marketed without choreography or stage performance. Slow Dancing's music video was filmed mostly in 16mm on the streets of Seoul, with V in oversize tailoring, walking and dancing alone.

He enlisted with RM on 11 December 2023, requesting and being assigned to the Capital Defense Command's Special Mission Unit. He served as a military police officer and was discharged on 10 June 2025. His enlistment was, like the rest of the BTS staggered rollout, a deliberately scheduled item rather than a deferral.

V's catalogue position inside BTS has long been that of the most genre-restless member. Where Jimin and Jungkook have leaned into contemporary pop, J-Hope into festival hip-hop, RM into art-rock and Suga into Korean-traditional-sample hip-hop, V has consistently chosen mid-century-coded musical reference points — jazz, lounge, soul — that read as the most adult of the band's solo trajectories. The Layover album is, by reasonable critical consensus, the most stylistically estranged-from-K-pop body of work to come from a BTS member's solo career to date.

His public image inside Korea has been, since approximately 2018, anchored to a small inner circle of close friends — the so-called Wooga Squad of actor Park Seo-joon, actor Choi Woo-shik, singer Park Hyung-sik and the chef-restaurateur Peakboy. The friend group has been documented through years of Instagram exchanges and a 2022 Disney+ travel series, In the Soop: Friendcation, in which the five travelled together in Korea. The Wooga Squad has become, in Korean entertainment journalism, a frequently cited case study of cross-discipline celebrity friendships built before fame rather than around it.

His luxury-brand profile is, by 2024, the most-active of any BTS member. He has served as a global ambassador for Cartier since 2023 and for Celine since 2024, a portfolio that overlaps with his sister's fashion industry profile and that has positioned him as a recurring fixture of the Paris fashion week schedule. The 2024 Cartier Trinity centennial campaign was built around his face. He has, in interviews about the commercial workload, repeatedly noted that the music remains the priority and the fashion campaigns are paced around the band's calendar — a hierarchy that the post-discharge schedule in 2025 has, in turn, made structurally visible.
