🇰🇷 Jimin (Park Ji-min)

Park Ji-min was born on 13 October 1995 in Geumjeong District, Busan — the Korean port city on the southern peninsula — and grew up in a working-class family. He studied contemporary dance at the Busan High School of Arts, where he was repeatedly ranked first in his class, and was preparing for university entrance into the Korea National University of Arts modern-dance programme when his dance teacher recommended him to Big Hit Entertainment in 2012.

He was the last member confirmed for BTS, joining the lineup in 2012 after only fourteen months of training — by far the shortest pre-debut run of any of the seven. The brevity of the training has been retold inside the band as a measure of how late his casting was; he has said publicly that he believed for the first several months he might be cut from the lineup before debut.

Inside BTS he occupies the dancer-vocalist role, with a high tenor that the band's producers — particularly the producer Pdogg — have used for the band's most vulnerable melodic moments. The 2016 solo Lie, on the album Wings, established the template: a contemporary-dance choreography around a vocal performance that the band has not, in interviews, claimed to be able to replicate from the rest of the lineup.

His first solo single, Promise, released free on SoundCloud on 31 December 2018, became the most-streamed song in the platform's 24-hour-debut history and held the record for two years. The 2020 follow-up, Christmas Love, similarly became a global K-pop holiday release. Both were unmonetised gifts to ARMY.

The first commercial solo project, the album Face, arrived on 24 March 2023 and was followed by the Like Crazy single release timed to chart on the Hot 100 in April. The number-one debut, debated on K-pop forums for several weeks because of an unusual chart pattern combining radio underperformance and very high download sales, was certified by Billboard after a review of fan-purchasing patterns in the standard way. Jimin had become, by chart fact, the first solo Korean act on top.

His second solo album, MUSE, released 19 July 2024, debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200 and the lead single Who entered the Hot 100 inside the top fifteen, eventually peaking at 11. The Who music video, choreographed by long-time BTS collaborator Son Sung-deuk and filmed largely in one extended take, has been used since by Korean dance academies as a teaching reference.

Inside BTS he is, by every interview-aged consensus, the member with the closest friendship to Jungkook — a relationship the band has discussed as elder-brother to younger-brother, the two having shared a hotel room on tour throughout the band's first decade. He enlisted with Jungkook on 12 December 2023, the two opting deliberately for the same enlistment date and serving together as roommates in the same army base, an arrangement covered by the Korean press as the most public buddy-system enlistment of the BTS rollout. He was discharged 11 June 2025.

His solo catalogue has been read, particularly by Korean critics, as the BTS member whose work most consistently performs vulnerability rather than swagger — a tonal register that, in the K-pop industry, has historically been gendered female. That Jimin's Hot 100 number-one was a Korean-male-vocalist contemporary-pop ballad rather than a hip-hop record is, in the longer cultural-history reading, one of the more quietly subversive facts about the BTS chart history.

His relationship with the BTS choreography canon is the deepest of any member. The 2017 Black Swan performance — staged by the Slovenian dance company MN Dance Company in their auditioned bid for the BTS visual — is built around a Jimin solo. The 2019 Filter, the 2020 Friends duet with V, and the 2022 group choreography for Yet to Come are all sequences he has identifiable creative weight inside. Korean dance academies use the Filter footwork as a syllabus item for second-year contemporary students.

His broader Korean cultural impact is also legible in the commercial categories: he was, in 2022, named one of Korea's top 10 brand-power celebrities by the Korean Brand Power Index, and his fashion partnerships through 2024 — Dior in particular, where he served as a global ambassador through the Kim Jones era — have positioned him as the second BTS member, after V, to anchor a luxury-brand campaign at the global ambassador tier. The MUSE rollout in July 2024 was timed to coincide with the Paris fashion week schedule, an unusual move for a K-pop release and a reflection of how cross-domain Jimin's commercial profile has become.
