🇬🇧 Mia Brookes

World champion at 16 — the youngest in snowboarding history, and the first Briton ever to win a slopestyle world title

Beat the reigning Olympic slopestyle champion at Bakuriani 2023 • Back-to-back Big Air Crystal Globes and the overall freestyle Crystal Globe • BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2023

Britain does not win snowboard world titles. It has no mountains of consequence, a domestic scene built largely on dry slopes and indoor snow domes, and a competitive history in freestyle snowboarding that consisted, until 2023, of near-misses. Then a sixteen-year-old from Cheshire won the women's slopestyle at the World Championships in Bakuriani, Georgia — beating a field that included Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, the reigning Olympic slopestyle champion from Beijing 2022. Mia Brookes became the youngest snowboard world champion in the sport's history and the first Briton to win a slopestyle world title. She has since added back-to-back Big Air Crystal Globes, the overall freestyle Crystal Globe, and two X Games golds.

The Bakuriani result was not a surprise on form so much as a surprise on nationality and age. Sadowski-Synnott had been the dominant slopestyle rider of the cycle; the New Zealander arrived as Olympic champion and left second. Brookes, who had spent her adolescence dividing time between Cheshire and the northern-hemisphere competition circuit, put down a run that the judges scored above hers. Sixteen is young for a world title in any discipline; in slopestyle, where the run demands both rail technicality and jump amplitude, it is young in two distinct ways at once.

What followed was the harder part. World titles in freestyle snowboarding are single-day events and can be won by a rider who peaks once. Crystal Globes cannot — they are awarded on season-long World Cup points, and they measure consistency across venues, conditions and formats. Brookes won the Big Air Crystal Globe twice in succession and then the overall freestyle snowboard Crystal Globe, which aggregates across disciplines. That is the record of a rider who does not depend on a single competition going well.

X Games sits outside the federation system and functions as the professional scene's own hierarchy. Brookes has medalled there repeatedly, including a slopestyle bronze and, weeks before the Milano Cortina Games, a second X Games gold in slopestyle. British Olympic sport had, before her, essentially no presence at that level of the freestyle circuit; her results have made the country a fixture at events it previously watched.

Domestic recognition arrived early. She won BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2023, the year of the world title — an award that in Britain functions as the mainstream's acknowledgement that a teenager has done something the public should know about. She has been consistently unglamorous in describing her motivations. Asked before Milano Cortina what she wanted from the Games, she told Olympics.com: "I just want to make my gran proud."

Milano Cortina 2026 was her Olympic debut, in women's big air and slopestyle. She came close to a medal and did not win one. This is the ordinary shape of an Olympic freestyle final, where three runs decide four years of work and a hand down on landing removes a competitor from contention. It is also a reminder that Crystal Globes and world titles do not transfer: the Olympic slopestyle field is the same riders, but the single-day format compresses everything.

She was nineteen at those Games, which places her Olympic peak plausibly ahead rather than behind. The more durable point is what she has already changed structurally. A country with no natural terrain now has a rider who has won a world championship, three Crystal Globes and multiple X Games medals — evidence that the constraint on British freestyle snowboarding was never the absence of mountains so much as the absence of a competitor at the top of the standings for younger riders to follow.

Winning a world title at sixteen is rare. Winning it for a country with no significant mountains, against the reigning Olympic champion, is a different order of result — and Brookes then did the thing that separates a one-day winner from a dominant athlete, by taking three season-long Crystal Globes that are awarded on consistency rather than on a single run.

Her Olympic debut at Milano Cortina 2026 produced a near-miss rather than a medal, which is the ordinary arithmetic of a three-run freestyle final. She was nineteen. The structural point stands regardless of the result: British freestyle snowboarding now has a rider at the top of the world standings, which it has never had before, and a generation of younger British riders with a visible route.
