Aaryan Nitin Shukla was born on 6 July 2010 in Nashik, Maharashtra, to Nitin and Meenal Shukla. He began practising mental calculation at the age of six, working with the abacus and with Vedic mathematics techniques. Within six to eight months his family realised the speed was not ordinary. 'I loved playing with numbers, so I started learning mental math since the age of 6,' he told NPR.
His parents have been careful about the framing. 'We are a normal family,' his father told Guinness World Records. 'Aaryan is a one in a billion kind of person, but I don't think that we are a family of mental calculators.' His mother described the trajectory plainly: 'At the age of six he started the practice of mental calculation. At the age of eight we went for an international competition and he won medals and trophies.'
That first international outing was the Memoriad Turkey Open in 2018, where at eight he took two junior world records and ten medals. In 2021 he became the youngest ever winner of the Mind Sports Olympiad's Mental Calculations World Championship. The following year, at the Mental Calculation World Cup in Paderborn, Germany, he won the overall title at twelve — setting event records in multiplication and square roots and multiplying two twenty-digit numbers in one minute and forty-five seconds.
The 2024 World Cup, held again at Paderborn's Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum in September, was a demolition. Shukla scored 819.84 out of 900 and finished 286.98 points clear of the runner-up, Bulgaria's Kaloyan Geshev. He swept every trophy on offer — addition, multiplication, square roots, calendar dates, a perfect score in the standard tasks and Most Versatile Calculator — and set five new world records in the process. Among them: all one hundred calendar dates correctly identified in a single minute, and square roots of six-digit numbers to eight significant digits at an average of 33.78 seconds each.
Then came Dubai. In a single session in December 2024, Shukla set six Guinness World Records: adding 100 four-digit numbers in 30.9 seconds; adding 200 four-digit numbers in 1 minute 9.68 seconds; adding 50 five-digit numbers in 18.71 seconds; dividing a twenty-digit number by a ten-digit number, ten times, in 5 minutes 42 seconds; multiplying two five-digit numbers, ten times, in 51.69 seconds; and multiplying two eight-digit numbers, ten times, in 2 minutes 35.41 seconds.
To put the addition record in perspective: 100 four-digit numbers in 30.9 seconds means absorbing and adding roughly three numbers every second, sustained, with no arithmetic errors permitted. Earlier the same year, on Italy's Lo Show dei Record, he had added 50 five-digit numbers in 25.19 seconds — a record he then beat by more than six seconds in Dubai.
The method is a mixture of trained technique and something harder to describe. Shukla uses abacus visualisation and Vedic arithmetic, and credits Sahaja Yoga meditation for the concentration the discipline demands. His practice is disciplined rather than obsessive: two to three hours a day as a baseline, rising to about five when a competition or a record attempt approaches. 'Generally, I practice for two to three hours,' he told NPR. 'But whenever a competition or some event come nearby, like Guinness World Record, so I generally do practice about five hours.'
Away from the numbers he is a student at Delhi Public School in Nashik who reads adventure and mystery novels, plays video games, and follows cricket and football statistics — a boy for whom sports tables are, unavoidably, another set of numbers to enjoy. At thirteen he became the youngest founding board member of the Global Mental Calculators Association, and he has said he intends to pursue mathematics or aerospace engineering.
In September 2025 Guinness World Records named him a Young Achiever in its 2026 edition, alongside a small group of record-breaking children. Asked how it felt, he gave the answer of someone still enjoying it: 'I feel great. I'm proud that I'm Officially Amazing.'
Mental calculation is a formally governed sport with its own world championships, standardised tasks and record-keeping. The Mental Calculation World Cup, held biennially in Paderborn, tests addition of ten-digit numbers, multiplication of eight-digit numbers, square roots to eight significant figures and calendar-date calculation — working out the weekday for any date across four centuries. Competitors are scored across all categories, which is why Shukla's sweep of every trophy in 2024 was so unusual: specialists normally dominate one discipline and lose ground in others.
The techniques behind the speed are trainable but rare in combination. Abacus-trained calculators visualise a mental bead frame and manipulate it faster than they could speak the digits; Vedic arithmetic supplies shortcuts for multiplication and division that collapse several conventional steps into one. What no method supplies is the working-memory capacity to hold a running total while absorbing three new four-digit numbers per second, which is the part Shukla cannot explain and cognitive scientists find most interesting.
His records have made him a reference case in the study of expertise. Researchers have long used calculating prodigies to probe where trained skill ends and unusual architecture begins, and Shukla's willingness to perform under adjudication — six ratified Guinness records in one supervised session — produces the kind of clean, measured data that anecdotal accounts of historical calculators never could.
