Ziya Gökalp is remembered for arguments the next generation could not ignore.
The record lists Ziya Gökalp as Turkish sociologist and writer (1876–1924).
Ziya Gökalp was born at Çermik district in 1876. His recorded nationality is Turkey. He studied at Istanbul University and veterinary education.
Around the turn of the twentieth century philosophy split into traditions that largely stopped reading one another.
His academic posts were held at Istanbul University and Dar ul-Funun.
Among his principal works are Türkçülüğün Esasları, Altın Işık and Muasırlaşmak. A philosophical position survives not by being proved but by resisting every attempt to dispose of it.
That the work was done from Turkey matters: philosophical traditions, institutions and the language of publication have never been evenly distributed.
Ziya Gökalp died in 1924, aged 48. The arguments remain in print, which is the form in which philosophy survives.
