Zoë Bell

Jumping from a moving vehicle for the New Zealand soap opera Shortland Street in 1992 marked the professional debut of Zoë Bell. Born in 1978 on Waiheke Island, she transitioned from a background in gymnastics and taekwondo into a career as a prominent stunt performer and actor within the global film industry.

Early Athletic Foundations

Growing up on Waiheke Island in Auckland, Bell engaged in diverse physical disciplines during her youth. Her repertoire included competitive gymnastics, track and field, high diving, and scuba. At age fifteen, she began training in taekwondo. She completed her formal education at Auckland Girls' Grammar School and Selwyn College.

Stunt Work in Television

Bell entered the stunt industry after her father, a doctor, provided her with a contact from a patient who worked as a stuntman. She performed stunts for series such as Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess, both filmed in New Zealand. While doubling for Lucy Lawless on Xena, she sustained back injuries involving fractured vertebrae during wire work and a separate incident involving a breakaway chair.

Collaboration with Quentin Tarantino

Bell gained international recognition for her work with director Quentin Tarantino. She served as Uma Thurman's stunt double in Kill Bill: Volume 1 and Volume 2, training in the wushu style for fight choreography. In Tarantino's 2007 feature Death Proof, she played herself and performed her own stunts, including a sequence clinging to the hood of a 1970 Dodge Challenger. Later appearances in Tarantino films include acting roles in The Hateful Eight and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the latter of which also credited her as a stunt coordinator.

Diversification and Industry Recognition

The 2004 documentary Double Dare chronicled her early Hollywood career alongside stunt veteran Jeannie Epper. Over her career, she has performed high falls for Catwoman, appearing as a double for Sharon Stone, and participated in productions including The Kingdom, Inglourious Basterds, and the web series Angel of Death. She portrayed Regina in the television series Lost and appeared in Drew Barrymore's Whip It. Bell received multiple Taurus World Stunt Award nominations and wins for her work in the Kill Bill franchise and Catwoman.
