The short film The Cathedral secured a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film after its 2002 victory at SIGGRAPH. Tomasz Bagiński, a Polish director and animator born in 1976 in Białystok, emerged from this success to become a central figure in digital production, maintaining a long-standing creative leadership role at Platige Image.
Early Career and Recognition
Bagiński studied architecture at the Warsaw University of Technology before establishing himself as a self-taught artist. His early professional work included the short film Rain, which facilitated his entry into Platige Image. Between 1999 and 2002, he developed The Cathedral, a production that earned him global attention within the animation industry. His second short film, Fallen Art, released in 2004, secured further industry accolades, including a BAFTA Award for Best Short Animation, a Prix Ars Electronica, and a Grand Prix at the Golden Horse Film Festival 2005, which he shared with Jarek Sawko and Piotr Sikora. He remains the only artist to receive two main awards at the SIGGRAPH festival.

Beyond original short films, Bagiński has built an extensive portfolio in commercial and promotional animation. He designed the book covers for Jacek Dukaj, including the novel Ice. His work in the video game sector is characterized by cinematic intros and trailers, including contributions to The Witcher series in 2007, 2011, and 2015, as well as the 2013 teaser for Cyberpunk 2077. Additionally, he directed the UEFA Euro 2012 promotional project Move Your Imagination. His output has appeared in numerous international trade publications across the United States, China, and Japan.
Executive Production and Recent Filmography
Bagiński has transitioned into roles as an executive producer and feature film director. He holds executive production credits for the Netflix series The Witcher (2019-2023), Into the Night (2020), and The Witcher: Blood Origin (2023). Future production credits include The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep and The Rats: A Witcher Tale, both slated for 2025. He directed the feature film Knights of the Zodiac in 2023. Currently represented by UTA, his professional achievements were formally recognized with the Knight of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
