Tariku Bekele

A bronze medal in the 10,000 metres at the 2012 Summer Olympics stands as the primary outdoor achievement of Ethiopian long-distance runner Tariku Bekele. Born in Bekoji on 28 February 1987, he established himself as a prominent competitor in the 3,000 and 5,000 metre distances, frequently contending on the global track circuit throughout the late 2000s.

Early Career and Junior Success

Bekele gained early recognition in youth athletics. In 2003, he secured a silver medal in the 3,000 metres at the World Youth Championships. The following year, he earned a bronze medal in the 5,000 metres at the World Junior Championships. His progression continued in 2006 when he achieved the 5,000 metre junior title and claimed a bronze medal in the junior race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

Transition to Senior Competition

His senior debut at the 2005 World Championships resulted in a seventh-place finish in the 5,000 metres. By 2007, he moved closer to the podium with a silver medal at the All-Africa Games and a fifth-place finish at the World Championships. In 2008, he won the 3,000 metre gold medal at the IAAF World Indoor Championships, marking his most significant victory at that stage.

Olympic and International Performance

Bekele participated in two Summer Olympics, representing Ethiopia in 2008 and 2012. While his 2008 appearance in Beijing resulted in a sixth-place finish in the 5,000 metres, his 2012 campaign in London yielded a bronze medal in the 10,000 metres. During his career, he also secured notable wins at the Prefontaine Classic and the Weltklasse Zurich meets in 2010, and won the Saint Silvester Road Race in 2011.
