His entry into party politics occurred in 1988 through the local upazila branch of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in Gabtali, Bogura. During the 1991 and 1996 national elections, he served as a campaign coordinator for his mother, Khaleda Zia. By the time the party held its 5th National Council in 2009, he had transitioned from Senior Joint Secretary General to Senior Vice Chairman.
Legal Proceedings and Exile
Following the 2007 military-backed caretaker government, Rahman faced detention for approximately 18 months. Upon his 2008 release, he moved to the United Kingdom for medical treatment at Wellington Hospital. Over the next decade, 84 cases were filed against him involving allegations of bribery, money laundering, and grenade attacks. Following the 2024 July Uprising, courts acquitted him of these charges and quashed his prior convictions, clearing the path for his 2025 return to Bangladesh.
Return to Power
Upon his repatriation in late 2025, Rahman mobilized for the 2026 general election. His electoral victory secured his position as Prime Minister of Bangladesh and confirmed his leadership as Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Recognition of his influence was formalized in 2026 when he was included in the Time Magazine list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.
