Academic Foundations and Scholarly Training
Padilha completed his secondary education at the Colégio Santo Inácio following earlier attendance at the Grupo Escolar D. Pedro II in Petrópolis and the Colégio Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora in Campinas. His higher education focused on Philosophy and Law, pursued primarily at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. He further refined his expertise through studies at the Escola Superior de Guerra and the Universidade Federal Fluminense, ultimately securing a PhD in Philosophy from the State University of Rio de Janeiro.

As a professor, Padilha maintained a presence at multiple universities across Rio de Janeiro. His pedagogical career included appointments at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, where he led the department, as well as the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, Universidade Santa Úrsula, Universidade Gama Filho, and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Beyond the classroom, he served on the permanent administrative body of the Escola Superior de Guerra and held a position within the Pontifical Council for the Family.

Elected as the fifth occupant of Chair 2 on 20 March 1997, Padilha succeeded Mário Palmério. His induction occurred on 13 June 1997, hosted by Arnaldo Niskier. Throughout his tenure, he played an active role in the body, eventually overseeing the institution as chairman during the years 2000 and 2001. During his time as an academician, he performed the official reception ceremonies for fellow members Ana Maria Machado, Luiz Paulo Horta, and Marco Lucchesi.
