Born in Velyka Novosilka in 1989, Stepanenko developed his skills within the Metalurh Zaporizhzhia youth system. During the 2006–07 season, he recorded 16 appearances for the junior side before earning a promotion to the senior squad. His debut occurred in a match against Dynamo Kyiv. By July 2007, he secured his first senior goal during a victory over Kryvbas. Over four seasons, he accumulated 81 appearances for the club.

In May 2010, Stepanenko signed a five-year contract with Shakhtar Donetsk alongside teammate Serhiy Kryvtsov. He quickly established himself, scoring his first goal for the club during a Champions League group stage win against Partizan Belgrade in November 2010. By September 2023, he reached a milestone of 400 appearances for the team during a fixture against Veres Rivne. In January 2024, he extended his commitment to the club until 2025.
International Experience and Later Career
Stepanenko captained the Ukraine national under-21 team, appearing 22 times. His senior international debut occurred in November 2010 during a friendly against Switzerland. He featured in the UEFA Euro 2016 squad for Ukraine. Beyond his primary roles, he spent a brief period at Kolos Kovalivka starting in March 2026. He finalized his retirement from professional play on 21 May 2026.
