Academic Formation and Early Activism
Fotopoulos received his initial education at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, where he earned degrees in Economics, Political Science, and Law. In 1966, he moved to London to pursue postgraduate studies at the London School of Economics on a Varvaressos scholarship. His early years were defined by active participation in student syndicalism and political movements, including the 1968 protests in London and the resistance against the Greek military junta between 1967 and 1974.

In 1997, Fotopoulos published Towards an Inclusive Democracy: The Crisis of the Growth Economy and the Need for a New Liberatory Project, which established the foundational principles of his inclusive democracy project. This work argues that current global crises—economic, political, and ecological—stem from the systemic concentration of power inherent in the market economy and representative democracy. He posits that an inclusive democracy, characterized by the equal distribution of power, serves as a necessary pathway to resolve these multifaceted crises.
Editorial and Academic Contributions
Beyond his monographs, Fotopoulos served as a Senior Lecturer in Economics at the Polytechnic of North London from 1969 until 1989. He transitioned into editorial work, leading publications such as Society & Nature, Democracy & Nature, and subsequently the International Journal of Inclusive Democracy. His prolific output includes over 900 articles and various contributions to edited volumes on globalization, education, and modern economic structures, alongside his role as a columnist for the Greek newspaper Eleftherotypia.
