Early Career and Comedy

In 1973, he formed the manzai duo Two Beat with Kiyoshi Kaneko, performing under the stage name Beat Takeshi. Their high-speed comedic style and provocative material gained significant popularity in the late 1970s and 1980s. Kitano secured a reputation as one of Japan's major television performers, appearing on programs like Takeshi's Castle, which became a global reference for physical game show television.

While maintaining his status as a television presenter, Kitano expanded into acting and directing. His first major acting role occurred in the 1983 film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. By 1989, he made his directorial debut with Violent Cop after original director Kinji Fukasaku departed the project. His directorial output evolved into a distinct style characterized by minimal dialogue, long takes, and a preoccupation with yakuza narratives and police dramas, exemplified by films like Sonatine and A Scene at the Sea.

Kitano earned international acclaim for his cinematic works throughout the 1990s and beyond. He received the Golden Lion at the 1997 Venice Film Festival for Hana-bi. His body of work includes films such as Kikujiro and a role in Battle Royale. In recognition of his contributions to the arts, he was honored with The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette in 2018. His career also extended to literature, painting, and even the design of the video game Takeshi no Chōsenjō.
