Samia Suluhu Hassan

Sworn in on 19 March 2021, Samia Suluhu Hassan became the first woman to serve as President of Tanzania. Her ascent to the executive office followed the death of her predecessor, John Magufuli, marking a transition that saw her consolidate power through both administrative realignment and the strategic appointment of key government officials.

Early Career and Education

Born in 1960 in the Sultanate of Zanzibar, she completed her secondary education in 1977. Her academic background includes an advanced diploma in public administration from the Institute of Development Management, which is now Mzumbe University, and a postgraduate diploma in economics from the University of Manchester. She later obtained an MSc in Community Economic Development through a joint program involving the Open University of Tanzania and Southern New Hampshire University. Her early professional life included roles as an office clerk, a development officer for the Zanzibar government, and a project manager with the World Food Programme.

Political Progression

In 2000, she became a special seat member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives and served as Minister for Youth Employment, Women and Children. By 2010, she moved to the national stage, winning the Makunduchi constituency seat for the National Assembly. President Jakaya Kikwete appointed her as the Minister of State for Union Affairs, and in 2014, she served as vice-chairperson of the Constituent Assembly during the drafting of a new constitution. In 2015, she made history as the first female vice-president of Tanzania after winning the election on the Chama Cha Mapinduzi ticket alongside John Magufuli.

Presidential Governance

Upon succeeding Magufuli, she initially sought to differentiate her leadership style. She implemented policies to manage the COVID-19 pandemic and focused on economic globalisation through increased tourism and foreign investment. She restructured her cabinet by removing Magufuli's close allies and reinstating several previously dismissed officials. However, her tenure faced international scrutiny regarding democratic processes. The 2025 general election, in which she secured 97.66% of the vote, saw the banning of the opposition party Chadema and the arrest of its leader, Tundu Lissu. Observers and media outlets have noted an increasingly authoritarian shift in her governance.
