Sami Al-Jaber

former Saudi Arabian footballer and manager

Forty-six goals scored across 156 international matches established Sami Abdullah Mohammed Al-Jaber as a central figure in Saudi Arabian football. Born in Riyadh on 11 December 1972, he participated in four consecutive FIFA World Cup tournaments between 1994 and 2006, scoring in three of those events and securing his place among the nation's most prolific attackers.

Club Tenure and International Milestone

Al-Jaber spent nearly two decades with Al-Hilal following his 1989 debut. His tenure was interrupted briefly in 2000 by a five-month loan to Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he made five appearances. He also experienced a short stint with Al-Ain in the United Arab Emirates. His international contributions were historic; on 27 May 1998, he reached his 100th cap in a match against Norway, becoming the youngest male player to achieve that milestone at 25 years, four months and 16 days.

Tournament Achievements and Setbacks

The 1996 AFC Asian Cup saw Al-Jaber contribute to a Saudi squad that claimed the title. His World Cup trajectory was uneven, highlighted by his participation in the 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2006 iterations. During the 2002 competition, his involvement was cut short by a burst appendix. After retiring from play in 2008, a testimonial match against Manchester United marked his final appearance for Al-Hilal, during which he scored a penalty in a 3-2 victory.

Managerial Transitions

Beginning in 2009, Al-Jaber transitioned into coaching by serving as an assistant at Al-Hilal under Eric Gerets, Gabriel Calderon, and Thomas Doll. He gained European experience in 2012 as an assistant with the French club Auxerre. By 27 May 2013, he was appointed manager of Al-Hilal, becoming the first Saudi to hold the role in 14 years. He subsequently moved to the technical manager position at Al Arabi on 19 July 2014.
