Sami Frashëri

Albanian writer, philosopher, playwright and activist (1850–1904)

The publication of the 1899 political treatise Albania: What she has been, What she is, What she shall be established a manifesto for the Albanian National Awakening. Authored by Sami Frashëri, the work articulated the urgent need for a unified and autonomous nation, transforming cultural advocacy into a structured program for political independence within the collapsing Ottoman Empire.

Early Education and Linguistic Foundations

Born in 1850 in the village of Frashër, Sami Frashëri received his foundational education at the local Bektashi tekke. Following the early deaths of his parents, Halit Bey and Emine Hanım, his brother Abdul relocated the family to Yanina. There, he attended the Zosimaia School. This environment provided him with a rigorous command of Latin, French, Greek, Italian, Persian, Arabic, and Turkish, providing the intellectual range necessary for his later career as a polymath.

Contributions to Ottoman Letters and Lexicography

Moving to Istanbul in 1872, Frashëri engaged deeply with the Ottoman bureaucracy while pursuing a prolific literary career. He authored over a dozen books, including works on social topics such as Insan and Kadınlar. His commitment to linguistic reform manifested in the creation of French-Turkish and Turkish-French dictionaries, an Arabic dictionary, a two-volume Ottoman Turkish dictionary, and the six-volume encyclopedia Kâmûsü'l-A'lâm. These texts were central to the evolution of Ottoman literature.

Political Dramaturgy and National Identity

Frashëri used the stage to articulate Albanian identity through his 1874 play, Besâ yâhut Âhde Vefâ. By focusing on the concept of besa—the pledge of honor—the drama explored themes of ethnic loyalty and self-sacrifice. Although intended to enrich local Ottoman theater, the play carried subversive political implications that resonated with the burgeoning national movement. Ottoman authorities eventually banned the Albanian language version for inciting national sentiments, though it remained a potent symbol for guerrilla groups.
