Early Development and Training
Born in 1980 in Tehran to Azerbaijani parents, Yusuf moved to Ealing, West London, in the early 1980s. His exposure to Western classical and Middle Eastern genres during his youth informed his later sound. He developed proficiency in piano and violin, alongside traditional instruments including the tar, oud, and tonbak. His academic background includes time at the Royal Academy and Salford University in north-west England.

The success of Al-Mu'allim established his presence in Egypt, Turkey, and across South-East Asia, with the title track topping charts for twelve consecutive weeks. His follow-up, My Ummah in 2005, utilised wide-ranging instrumentation and sold over four million copies. By 2016, his total album sales reached 34 million. Following his departure from Awakening Records, he continued his output through Andante Records, focusing on projects like the 2016 album Barakah.
Philanthropy and Musical Evolution
Yusuf's engagement with humanitarian issues led to his appointment as a United Nations Global Ambassador for the World Food Programme in 2014. His later work, such as the 2012 album Salaam and the 2018 EP SAMi, displays a shift toward diverse cultural inquiries and accessible Western-rooted sounds. He has performed at major international venues, including Wembley Arena, the Dubai Opera, and Taksim Square, where his 2013 performance drew an audience of 250,000.
