Early Career and European Transition
Hyypiä started his journey at Pallo-Peikot and KuMu before joining MyPa for the 1992 season, where he secured the Finnish Cup twice. His initial exposure to the English game came during a 1995 trial at Newcastle United under Kevin Keegan. Later that year, he signed with the Dutch club Willem II. In May 1999, Liverpool signed Hyypiä for £2.6 million. He immediately formed a formidable defensive partnership with Stéphane Henchoz. His time at Anfield included a 2001 cup treble consisting of the League Cup, FA Cup, and UEFA Cup. While he served as team captain in the 2001–02 season, he later shared defensive duties with Jamie Carragher. This pairing proved instrumental during the club's victorious 2004–05 Champions League campaign. Across ten years, he made significant contributions to the club before departing in 2009 for Bayer Leverkusen, where he retired in 2011.
