Samantha Cristoforetti commanded ISS Expedition 68 in 2022, marking a significant milestone in her career as an astronaut with the European Space Agency. Born in Milan in 1977, she transitioned from a background in military aviation and engineering to become the first Italian woman to travel into space, setting endurance records for European participants during her service.
Academic and Military Foundation
Cristoforetti pursued an extensive education before entering the space program. She graduated from the Technical University of Munich with a degree in mechanical engineering and attended the Accademia Aeronautica in Pozzuoli, where she earned a degree in aeronautics sciences. Her military career saw her serve as a fighter pilot in the Italian Air Force, completing Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot training and logging over 500 flight hours across six different military aircraft types, including the AM-X and MB-339.

Selected as an ESA astronaut in 2009 from a pool of 8,000 applicants, Cristoforetti launched to the International Space Station on 23 November 2014 aboard Soyuz TMA-15M for her first mission, titled Futura. She spent 199 days in orbit, briefly holding the record for the longest single space mission by a woman. In 2022, she returned to the station for her second mission, Minerva, traveling via the SpaceX Crew-4 mission. Throughout her time in space, she operated critical hardware, such as the zero-G espresso machine known as ISSpresso.
Outreach and Professional Recognition
Throughout her career, Cristoforetti maintained a focus on public engagement. She participated in the ARISS initiative to speak with students via amateur radio and led the Mission X outreach program. Her contributions were formally recognized by the Italian government; in 2015, she was appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Additionally, she has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the Ambrogino d'oro.
