Early Development and Talent Discovery
Born Jatin Khanna, he was raised by adoptive parents Chunnilal and Leelawati Khanna. During his youth in Mumbai, he attended St. Sebastian Goan High School and later Hill Grange High School. His formal education included studies at Ness Wadia College of Commerce from 1959 to 1961, followed by time at Kishinchand Chellaram College. His interest in drama led him to perform in numerous stage plays, eventually catching the attention of talent scouts. In 1965, he emerged as one of the winners in an All India Talent Contest, which secured his entry into the professional film circuit.

Khanna made his professional film debut in 1966 with Aakhri Khat. His career trajectory shifted dramatically in 1969 with the release of the romantic musical Aradhana, which achieved massive success. This was followed by the hit family drama Do Raaste. The ensuing years saw a rapid succession of blockbusters, including Anand, Haathi Mere Saathi, and Kati Patang. These projects, often bolstered by successful musical soundtracks, cemented his status as a cultural phenomenon.
Political Engagement and Later Life
Beyond his artistic work, Khanna transitioned into public life as a politician. Representing the Indian National Congress, he served as a Member of the Lok Sabha for the New Delhi constituency from 1992 until 1996. Throughout his life, he received several accolades for his contributions to cinema, including the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005 and the posthumous Padma Bhushan in 2013. He passed away in Mumbai on 18 July 2012.
