February 2017 marked the elevation of Rajesh Gopinathan to the role of Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Tata Consultancy Services. At the time of his appointment, he stood as one of the youngest executives to hold the top leadership position within the Tata Group, a transition occurring after four years as the firm's Chief Financial Officer.
Formative Education
Born in 1971 in Thrissur, Gopinathan completed his schooling at St. Mary's Convent School (RDSO) and St. Francis' College in Lucknow, graduating in 1987. His technical foundation began with an Electrical and Electronics Engineering degree from the Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli, now the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, in 1994. He later earned a post-graduate diploma in Management from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad in 1996.

Gopinathan began his professional path at the Tata Strategic Management Group in 1996. He transitioned to Tata Consultancy Services in 2001, initially working to develop the company's e-business unit in the United States. His early contributions included designing the firm's operational model and organizational structure. Before his elevation to the top executive role, he served as Vice President of Business Finance, managing the financial operations of individual units, followed by a tenure as Chief Financial Officer beginning in 2013.
Leadership and Market Growth
During his term as Chief Executive, the company reached significant financial benchmarks. By the end of the 2020 fiscal year, it operated as a US$22 billion global entity. In April 2018, the market capitalization surpassed US$100 billion, establishing the firm as the most valuable company in India. Under his tenure, the organization grew to support over 469,000 associates. In 2021, the company's brand value reached US$15 billion, securing a position among the top three IT services brands globally.
Transition and Current Role
Gopinathan resigned from his executive position effective 31 May 2023. He was succeeded by K. Krithivasan, who had served as the president and global head of the banking, financial services and insurance vertical. Following his departure from the organization, Gopinathan transitioned into academia, joining IIT Bombay as a professor of practice and head of Translational Research & Entrepreneurship.
