The cinematic career of Rajkumar Hirani began behind the camera in the advertising industry before his 2003 directorial debut, Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., redefined the comedic landscape of Hindi film. Since then, the Nagpur-born filmmaker has established a reputation for balancing lighthearted narrative structures with poignant observations on societal expectations and the Indian education system.
Early Development and Training
Born in 1962 in Nagpur, India, Hirani was raised by his father, Suresh Hirani, who operated a typing institute. Despite his parents' desire for him to pursue engineering, he gravitated toward theatre and film. Following a brief attempt at acting school in Mumbai, he enrolled in the film editing course at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, where he secured a scholarship and spent substantial time analyzing the works of Satyajit Ray.

Before achieving success as a feature director, Hirani worked for several years in television advertising, directing campaigns such as the Fevicol elephant spot and the Kinetic Luna commercials. He eventually pivoted to film, initially collaborating with Vidhu Vinod Chopra on promotional material for 1942: A Love Story and Kareeb. His first credit as a professional film editor was for Chopra's action drama Mission Kashmir, released in 2000.
The Munna Bhai Franchise
Hirani’s directorial breakthrough arrived with 2003’s Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., a comedy-drama about a goon infiltrating medical school. The film was a critical and commercial success, earning Hirani the Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay and a National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. In 2006, he directed the sequel, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, which became the year's third highest-grossing film and secured further industry recognition for his writing and direction.
Success with Social Satire
Hirani continued his trajectory with 3 Idiots in 2009, a coming-of-age comedy-drama exploring pressures within the Indian education system. He later released the religious satire PK in 2014 and the biographical drama Sanju in 2018, both of which reached significant commercial milestones. His latest project, the 2023 film Dunki, featured Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role and received mixed reviews upon its theatrical release.
