Rajendra Bhatia

Indian mathematician

The Bhatia–Davis inequality bears the name of Rajendra Bhatia, an Indian mathematician whose work focuses on matrix analysis and the calculus of matrix functions. Born in 1952, he has spent decades contributing to the fields of statistics and mathematics through both his formal research and his extensive commitment to academic publishing and education.

Academic Foundation

Bhatia completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Delhi, where he earned a BSc in physics and an MSc in mathematics. He moved to the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata for his doctoral research, where he completed his Ph.D. in 1982 under the supervision of the probabilist K. R. Parthasarathy. Throughout his career, he has maintained strong ties to the Indian Statistical Institute, serving as a professor there before moving to his current position at Ashoka University in Sonipat, Haryana.

Research and Mathematical Contributions

His primary research interests encompass matrix inequalities, the means of matrices, and the intersection of matrix analysis with harmonic analysis and geometry. Bhatia has contributed significantly to the mathematical literature, publishing notable works including "Perturbation Bounds for Matrix Eigenvalues" in 1987, "Matrix Analysis" in 1997, "Positive Definite Matrices" in 2007, and "Fourier Series." He has also served on the editorial boards for international publications, including the SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications and "Linear Algebra and Its Applications."

Professional Impact and Recognition

Beyond his research, Bhatia established the "Texts and Readings in Mathematics" series in 1992 and initiated "Culture and History of Mathematics" to document the history of Indian mathematical contributions. His achievements have been acknowledged with several professional accolades, including the INSA Medal for Young Scientists in 1982 and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in 1995. In 2017, he received the Hans Schneider Prize in Linear Algebra. He is a member of the Indian National Science Academy and the Indian Academy of Sciences.
