Academic Foundation
Born in Jammu in 1962, Motwani moved to New Delhi where he attended St Columba's School. He pursued undergraduate studies at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, graduating with a B.Tech in Computer Science in 1983. He subsequently moved to the United States to earn a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1988, working under the supervision of Richard M. Karp.

Joining the faculty at Stanford University, Motwani established the Mining Data at Stanford project, known as MIDAS, to explore data management concepts. His research portfolio included robotics, computational drug design, and data privacy. He is credited as an originator of the Locality-sensitive hashing algorithm and co-authored foundational papers on the PageRank algorithm alongside Sergey Brin, Larry Page, and Terry Winograd. His pedagogical contributions included co-authoring Randomized Algorithms with Prabhakar Raghavan and Introduction to Automata Theory, Languages, and Computation with John Hopcroft and Jeffrey Ullman.
Entrepreneurial Influence
Beyond the classroom, Motwani acted as a bridge between academia and the startup ecosystem. He served as a special advisor to Sequoia Capital and held board positions at various firms, including Google, Mimosa Systems, Adchemy, Baynote, Vuclip, NeoPath Networks, and Tapulous. His involvement extended to the Business Association of Stanford Entrepreneurial Students, where he supported student-led ventures.
Professional Recognition and Demise
Motwani received the Gödel Prize in 2001 for his work on the PCP theorem. He was also a Sloan Fellow and an ACM Fellow. In June 2009, he was found dead at his residence in Atherton, California. The San Mateo County coroner concluded that the death was an accidental drowning.
