Early Development and Education
Born in 1943 in the Bronx, Marshall was the daughter of Marjorie Irene and Anthony W. Marshall. She grew up in a building that housed several future creative figures. Marshall moved to Los Angeles in 1967 to work with her brother, Garry Marshall. Early roles included guest appearances on programs such as That Girl and a recurring part as Myrna on The Odd Couple. In 1975, she appeared as Laverne DeFazio on an episode of Happy Days. This character proved popular, leading to the creation of the spin-off series Laverne & Shirley. The sitcom premiered in 1976 and secured top ratings for several seasons.
Transition to Directing
Marshall debuted as a film director with the 1986 comedy Jumpin' Jack Flash. Her subsequent work earned significant critical and commercial attention. Notable credits include Awakenings, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, A League of Their Own, Renaissance Man, The Preacher's Wife, and Riding in Cars with Boys. Additionally, she produced projects such as Cinderella Man and Bewitched.
