Reaching the world No. 1 ranking in doubles in February 2014, Peng Shuai became the first tennis player from China to secure the top spot in any professional tennis discipline. Her career, defined by a distinct two-handed technique on both sides of the court, spanned over two decades and included major titles at Wimbledon and the French Open.
Early Development and Surgery
Born in Xiangtan in 1986, Peng began training at age eight under the guidance of her uncle, a coach in China. In 1999, she entered a specialized state training program in Tianjin. Her athletic trajectory faced a significant obstacle at age 13 when she underwent heart surgery to correct a physical defect. She later integrated this personal challenge into public advocacy, participating in the 2008 Adidas campaign titled Impossible is Nothing.

Peng turned professional in 2001, debuting at a $10k event in Baotou and later at the Shanghai WTA tournament. By 2005, she made the strategic decision to operate independently from the state sports system, a move that allowed her to retain more of her earnings. Her ascent through the rankings was marked by consistent performances in major tournaments, including a notable third-round appearance at Wimbledon in 2006 and a semifinal run at the 2014 US Open.
Success in Doubles
The pinnacle of her professional achievement occurred in the doubles format alongside partner Hsieh Su-wei. The duo claimed their first major title at the 2013 Wimbledon Championships and followed this success by winning the 2014 French Open. Beyond major championships, Peng represented China on the global stage, earning a gold medal in singles at the 2010 Asian Games.
Controversy and Later Years
In November 2021, Peng posted allegations on the platform Weibo concerning a long-term sexual relationship with former Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli. Following this disclosure, she disappeared from public view, sparking international concern and leading the WTA to suspend events in China. While she has made limited public appearances since the incident, WTA events resumed in the country in 2023.
